Halloween costumes can sometimes be super expensive, more so now that children want to be K-pop demon hunters or a roblox game character, gone are the days of simple plastic masks and witch fingers.
But that doesn’t mean we can’t have fun and find cost effective ways to do things, this year my children aren’t with me for Halloween however the years that I have them I’ve always tried to keep the cost of the costumes that they’ll potentially only use once or twice before growing out of them. So I wanted to share some tricks (heh get it?) to creating cost effective Halloween costumes.

Cost effective Halloween costumes
Simple and effective is always a go to, we do have a small collection of fancy dress that we’ve collected over the years with various world book days so sometimes digging into that pile is the first port of call, whether it’s a fluffy cat or Dalmatian outfit or even perhaps that old Gryffindor uniform from when they was Harry Potter it can be reused and even made gory with some fake blood and makeup.
One other simple and cost effective is looking into even the wardrobe of every day wear, perhaps they have some old striped pyjamas that could be reused as a prison outfit or an old works uniform and go as a zombie Tesco shelf filler, with Halloween creativity is key and of course as I’ve said plenty of makeup and fake blood!
One thing I often try and do is make our own, of course this does rely on having the craft tools at hand, However you can pick up a cheap glue gun and sticks from your local HobbyCraft as well as foam, feathers and glitter at a low price to create something completely unique and fun, Robin for world book day this year said she wanted to be Dog Man and I managed to create the perfect hat for our Dog detective.

Or, if you are from the time when cheap was always the way to go and raiding your parents makeup to draw on cat whiskers and having to build tails out of old socks stuffed with cotton wool and hanger wire ears.. also made from old socks..
And of course the trusty white bedsheet with holes cut out for eyes so you can pretend to be a spooky ghost and terrorise your neighbours into handing over the goods (sweeties).
Halloween is meant to be fun, it’s meant to not be taken seriously and sometime the best costumes are those born out of cheap tips and tricks you can find online.
As I said this year I won’t have my children with me but I will be off to our local to watch a band with cat ears on my head and a drink in my hand to enjoy it.. semi adult style!
What’s your favourite memory of making a cheap costume for Halloween?

I was looking at some old photos and in a few of them, I’m wearing a random collection of mismatched clothes. I don’t remember what I was going for other then a clown? I also have a photo of me dressing up in a thrift store dress to be an elegant dead lady. or a coffee zombie You can definitely make costumes out of anything and face paint.
yup!! as long as you look out of place it works haha!
