With autumn just a few weeks away its so important to plan and prepare for the change of season, preparing the house for autumn is one of my priorities, I always enjoy changing up bits and pieces of the house when the seasons change and of course love a good clear out of things that have a habit of acclimated over the 6 weeks of the summer.
Autumn which I have said previously on a post is my favourite season and I simply love adding autumnal elements into my home once the heat of the summer months are gone, This year I will be honest in saying that some pumpkins from Hobby Craft have made their way into my home earlier than usual but I think they make my little window display look even better and the fact that they’re reusable means that they can come out every year.

Preparing for autumn can help change a number of aspects of turning your home from a cool summer refuge and into a cosy nook ready for darker evenings, Out come the candles both real and fake, many of them which I get from our local Home Sense which I have acquired over the years along with many soft throws and blankets.
However I wanted to write a list of things that I do to prepare the house for autumn;
- Put away the summer fans – Obviously sometimes in the September it can be rather warm, so ideally only do this once the days start getting much cooler,
- Buy batteries for all the torches in the house – With the darker months closing in and the possibility of some winter storms knocking out old power lines its always best to stock up on batteries.
- Get out and wash the warmer clothes – Because they would’ve been kept in storage for the summer collecting dust and pollen. its safe to say I’m excited about thick tights and warm jumpers.
- Change up the meal plan – This doesn’t mean you cannot enjoy a salad when its cooler, it just means finding some new and warming meals to cook for your family to enjoy. We love cooking stews up in the slow cooker, you can read one of my recipes which was inspired by my nan here.
- Break out the Wellies and Boots – Much like the warm clothing, finding the weather proof shoes that might have been stored away is always a must for me, I got a lovely pair of boots in Wales a few years back and I am excited to wear them again.
- Check boiler – Sometimes my boiler loses pressure throughout the year, occasionally I need to bring the pressure back to normal and thanks to a handy video on YouTube knew how to do this, however if you do this you will then need to bleed the radiators to help the hot water circulate through the home.
- Have a small stockpile of food – Now not saying we will get another snowy day, but there’s no harm in being prepared, I have plenty of tins, frozen meals and other items stored away just in case I cannot get to the shops and the best time to do it is in autumn.
There are loads of other things that you can do to prepare your home, These are just some of the bits that I do in the run up to the best time of the year, and I am simply so excited about being able to cosy up with my children under the warm blankets and welcome in the months of ‘Ber
