As you are probably aware if you follow me on bluesky I have been obsessed with my garden and growing my own veg this year, I have planted and eaten so many yummy things from my garden and even started planning for next years growing season. Due to the amount of googling and research I have done I have been inundated with adverts on my private social medias for places that sell seeds and already established plants from many different websites, the one that stuck out the most for Neil was the South Devon Chilli Farm.
One of the bonuses of buying already established plants is that you are going to get something that is already producing produce and is unlikely to suffer with any usual issues that growing from seed can cause. I am not a huge chilli person but I am very much into growing things so Neil ordered three plants to have delivered to my house for me to take care of in my ever growing garden of goodies.
Chilli plants are always a bit of a suprise for me, I got a smaller plant back when I started growing and for the longest time felt like it wasnt doing anything, growing but not producing any flowers and then one day suddenly flowers and fruit appear, these chilli plants from the south devon chilli farm come with fruit already growing on them as well as the potental to flower and grow more when they are in your care and like their mild cousin the bell pepper need warmth to ripen so once the weather changed slightly during september I brought them all inside so they can continue to grow during the autumn and winter months and ripen into pretty fruit.
Also one would assume that most if not all chilli plants are spicy, two of the plants are considered mild, although as Ive said I am not big into chillis so I havent tempted to try any of them just yet.
What we ordered
Neil ordered a collection of different types, Anaheim, Hungarian Hot Wax and Apple Crisp, Both the apple crisp and the anaheim will turn a lovely shade of red when ripe and the hot wax will turn a shade of orange, at the moment the Anaheim has only grown three chillis on the plant itself and one has already been eaten while in its cooler green stage, the hot wax has been tried while in its yellow stage and the apple crisp has been tried in both its cooler green stage as well as its slightly firey red stage.
Now that theyre inside they are going to be left to ripen and grow and hopefully produce some delightful spicy fruit.
South Devon Chilli Farm is a good place to buy lots of different plants to try and you can also visit them to walk through their many polly tunnels, ordering online was fast and convenient, fairly straight forward and come packaged in a protective box with the plant potted, the only thing I found was that the plants were in a smaller pot that can support the plant itself so I transplanted them as soon as they arrived into a larger pot and soon perked up after their journey to my home.
I do recommend giving the South Devon Chilli Farm a go, at the moment a lot of their plants are out of stock simply as we are entering the end of the growing season but I have bookmarked the page and will be trying some different plants in the new year.
