As part of our trip to Cambridge the plan was to have a big joint birthday mean for Neil’s Mum, Dad and myself, While his dad and I share the month of April, we didnt get a chance to celebrate his mums birthday with her so decided to have a nice fancy meal out for all of us. The River Bar Steakhouse is situated as you can probably guess it just on the river Cam.

The restaurant itself is inside a beautiful refurbished 18th Century warehouse just on the river, if you get the perfect window during your meal you can literally watch the world of Cambridge float past on the water, We sadly didn’t get a seat by the window but given that the day we went was rather hot being away from the sun was a blessing, There was plenty of seating upstairs and down as well as a rooftop terrace that you need to prebook in advance and I would assume would be popular in the summer months with a cooling glass of Pimm’s in hand.
I can say that the staff at the restaurant are friendly and accommodating, I struggle with the sun sometimes as it can trigger my migraines we requested to move tables and they was more than happy to allow us to move around and I even overheard a customer comment of how hot it was and they switched on their a/c to cool everyone down which was an absolute blessing as it was a very warm day.

The restaurant has three menus depending on the time of day you attend, we had our meal in the evening so enjoyed the dinner menu but they also offer a weekday lunch as well as a wonderful Sunday menu and of course a delightfully fun cocktail menu which I think is where we spent the most of our money.

Neil and I shared a starter, Having never tried camembert I asked him if he wanted to share it and he of course did and I may have fallen in love with a cheese that night, it was creamy and delicious, I am salivating now just thinking about it and of course made a little start on the cocktails, my first one was a Strawberry Daiquiri which I then soon regretted as it was just too strong for and switched too a River Bar cocktail called Frisky Vixen which was much better for my pallet, I think what I liked about the cocktail menu is that it has a graph that shows you how each cocktail would be for your tastes and not many restaurants have that on their menus.
For the main meal I decided on something different to my usual tastes, Mushroom Risotto, Obviously trying to take a photo of a brown/grey dish was a little bit of challenge, it came with cheese that you can springle on top and I went with a side of Spinach as I am a sucker for spinach which was a lovely addition to my risotto, I then felt far to full for a pudding however Neil and his family had something. I couldn’t eat another bite.
All in all we had a wonderful evening out, we took a slow walk back from restaurant to our hotel which was only on the other side of the river and sat in the bar of the Hotel playing Uno and enjoying a few drinks (shots) before heading to bed.
If you are ever in the city of Cambridge I recommend giving The River Bar Steakhouse a try but be prepared to spend a fortune on their delicious cocktails!
