My children love Strawberries, and what better way to celebrate them by making delicious treats out of them. Myself and my children along with their nan often like to visit the wonderful Cammas Hall Farm which is situated in the beautiful countryside of Hertfordshire. We try and visit there every year to collect together strawberries for jam and this year was no different.
All bundling into mums car we made out way on a lovely sunny day, You can prebook on their website for a time slot which they’ve had implemented since they reopened during covid times and if I am honest I prefer it as it makes it less manic. Cammas Hall is a family run farm that has been growing since 1889 and they started their famous pick your own in the late 60’s.
Since then its been growing in popularity and produce that run all through he season into autumn with their fun pumpkin patch and Halloween events as well as a maize maze, nature trail, fun play area for the children to run about and wonderful locally sourced food and drink, there is lots to do and see at Cammas Hall Farm, not only for children either but plenty for adults to enjoy with shows, spooky after dark events and CammasFest which boasts good food and live music.
But enough about what’s coming, I’m writing my post today to share our strawberry fun.
We arrived for our booking shortly after 3:15, paying and booking online I personally find a lot easier for everything and while I do miss spontaneously turning up, being able to go and not have to fight over the fruit is a definite highlight. We collected out buckets, all four of them, and was directed to where the best strawberry plants are on the field, Once we had a nice little walk we found the fruit and started picking.
To start with there wasn’t many that we could see and then Amelia found lots of huge strawberries hidden within the plant itself and before you knew it we had somehow filled up two punnets of strawberries. Robin was a little freaked out by some of the bugs that floated about but she soon got stuck in and filled up her tub full of strawberries, even Kai the grumpy, ‘I prefer my phone and laptop’ teenager enjoyed himself and picked loads.
Once we had filled up the tubs, which really didn’t take to long, we took them to be weighed and paid and then it was time to go and enjoy the outdoor play park and some much enjoyed ice cream and Kai then got himself some apple juice from the shop.
Once the fun had been had we headed back to mums house to both eat the strawberries and prepare them for what was to come next..
‘Some of you will be jam, Some of you will be gin’
I washed and took the greenery off one of the tubs of strawberries that was going to be turned into gin and the rest got washed, had their greens taken off, separated into three bags and placed in the freezer ready to be turned into jam at a later date.
We always have such a lovely time at Cammas Hall and its becoming a little tradition for us during the summer holidays, the children just love picking the strawberries and then getting home and eating them, We need to get back there for the Halloween and autumn events too during the coming months.
