I adore movies, I have been an avid viewer of films and tv shows for many years now, mainly because I am about to enter my 40th year here (one year to go), But also because thanks to an old friend who I sadly lost recently I gained a love for the behind the scenes of films and the technical side of film making. I wanted to share with you some of those films that made a big impact in my life –

The Wizard of Oz –

I cannot count with the amount of times that I have watched this film, one of my fondest memories is sitting with my nan while she baby sat me after school and her putting on this ancient VHS tape that was recorded off the BBC one day in the past, I must have worn that tape thin, I actually still remember the BBC advert shortly before the film starts. The Wizard of Oz holds a special place in my heart simply because of my nan, she sadly died in the early 2000’s but the love I have for that film lives on and so does her memory. I don’t watch it as obsessively as I did as a child but with the recent launch of Wicked, my children and I sat down to watch it, they’re not as attached as I ways to the film but still its always lovely sharing a piece of my cinema past with the future.. and of course everyone wants those ruby slippers

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy –

Not so much the trilogy itself but more the boxset that you could buy, it had all three of the films along with hours and hours of detailed information about the making of the film. At the time I was into commentaries, I considered and do still to this day that commentaries are a highlight of a film and couldn’t wait to sit down after watching a new dvd and then going right to the special features and rewatch it with the director and cast. These days movies do not have the fun special features and given that a lot of films are streamed you don’t often find commentaries. Lord of the Rings was where my love affair of behind the scenes began and now I bore anyone with facts of the creative side of film making

Jurassic Park –

When I first saw Jurassic Park I was terrified, it was essentially the first scary film that I had seen at the time and it scared me so much that I didn’t watch it again until I was much older, but by that point The Lost World was out and I was hooked onto Dinosaurs and wanted to rewatch it, and swiftly fell in love with Sam Neill and of course dinosaurs. I managed to see Jurassic Park 3 in the cinema, which wasn’t the most loved among fans, but I still loved it and got excited for the newest instalments with Jurassic World. I feel that without Jurassic Park I don’t think I would love dinosaurs as much.

Harry Potter Series –

I know this series is slightly controversial, but without the Harry Potter movies and books I don’t think I would’ve developed a love for drawing and art as well as writing, At the time the films were released I was in school and a heavy internet user, I found a small group of people who also loved Potter and we had so much fun creating stories and artwork. Reading and sharing fanfiction and placing ourselves in different houses. (I am Hufflepuff) and just loving the universe, When we saw the films it placed us all in a world that we had dreamt off and fed into our creativity, without Harry Potter I wouldn’t have made some good friends and I’m thankful for all of that.

The Cornetto Trilogy –

I recently went and watched Shaun of the Dead in the cinema gain for their 20 year release, which frankly makes me feel positively ancient, but it gave such a sense of nostalgia and fun, I have seen all three of the cornetto trilogy many many times however viewing them in the cinema just felt like old times, if I ever see Hot Fuzz on the tv I will watch it and I will admit that their third installment The Worlds End which a lot of people claim is their least favourite has gotten better with multiple viewings. There’s just something so magical with Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg and I highly recommend you watch them all!
